Rothay Manor completes first phase of extensive refurbishment - offering stunning new interiors and exceptional food in the Lakes from 2021

Ambleside’s leading independent boutique hotel and restaurant reveals its impressive new-look for 2021, following the completion of the first phase of an extensive £1.25m refurbishment. The project has been four years in the making, since husband-and-wife co-owners Jamie and Jenna Shail acquired the business in 2016.

After this exceptionally turbulent year, felt heavily by the hospitality industry, Rothay Manor is very much looking forward to welcoming guests to experience the new offering. The ambitious renovation has seen almost all the rooms and suites, plus the restaurant, drawing room and Brathay Lounge, redesigned by Matt Hulme of Dynargh Design – joined by Jamie and Jenna repainted the vast white façade during the sunny weeks of ‘Lockdown 1.0”.

The next stage begins in January 2021, introducing a new boot room complete with a doggy wash, a new orangery reception area and the transformation of a cottage, in the grounds, into a new block of 8 stunning en suite bedrooms.

Inspired by the hotel’s picturesque location in the Lakes, the new interiors bring a sense of the outdoors in – using a soft, country-inspired, colour palette peppered with opulent fabrics, sumptuous furnishings and luxury amenities. Stoney Ground, Bancha and Sulking Room Pink Farrow & Ball hues balance out bold wallpapers from William Morris, Lewis & Wood and Colfax and Fowler, alongside Pooky lampshades, tweed or soft leather furnishings. The most recently renovated Fairfield Suite boasts exposed original beams, a stunning double ended cast iron bath and a whimsical hand painted mural by Melissa White that envelopes all four rooms sitting room walls.

The spacious bedrooms are individually designed, offering deluxe signature styles. Guests can choose between those with balconies boasting garden views, secluded terraces or even a private hot tub – all come complete with super-king beds, feather duvets, Egyptian cotton linens and sumptuous toiletries.

Offering eight dog-friendly bedrooms, four legged friends need not be left behind. Canine companions will find George Barclay beds, Nibble & Nosh treats, biodegradable waste bags, towels and bowls waiting to welcome them.

The hotel is firmly renowned for its foodie credentials and the dining experience is led by head chef Daniel McGeorge, who recently joined the likes of chefs such as Marcus Wareing, Jason Atherton, and Marco Pierre White in being awarded a highly prestigious Acorn award.

Fine dining is offered in the award-winning 3 AA Rosette restaurant, while the Brathay offers a relaxed atmosphere and menu filled with hearty seasonal fare such as chicken burgers, risotto and all-time favourite sticky toffee pudding.

For guests dining in the restaurant, there is a choice to design their own 5 or 7 course seasonally inspired tasting menu from dishes including Scottish langoustine with carrot, yuzu, timut pepper with shiso and Cumbrian saddleback pork fillet and belly with beetroot, crap apple, dandelion and oats. The team also cater for private hire, exclusive use and winter weddings.

Elegant and unfussy, yet stylish and homely - this unrivalled boutique bolthole is just the tonic for escaping the stresses of modern living
