NEW BOHEMIAN BOLTHOLE OPENS IN MARGATE

Introducing a brand-new boutique guest house by the sea - from July 1st, 2023 – Margate House.

Margate’s coolest new coastal retreat boasts eclectic design, nine en-suite bedrooms, a make-yourself-at-home attitude – and it’s just a stone’s throw from sandy beaches and a thriving social scene.

Margate House has been the brainchild and passion project for Will Jenkins who has lovingly restored (much with his own hands) this previously derelict building into Margate’s hottest new opening. Will, a property developer and owner of a successful London rental company, found himself in Margate over 3 years ago looking for his next project. Thinking this would potentially be a flat or two, never did he dream of opening and running his own guesthouse. But, when he stumbled upon this charming Victorian townhouse, his imagination took over.

Seeing a gap in the market for an independently-run guesthouse oozing with charm and colour in Margate, he took on the challenge and it’s been a full-time passion project ever since.

Once the epitome of British seaside hedonism, now a cultural hotspot – Margate’s 21st-century renaissance continues as the launch of Margate House follows a wave of new art galleries, restaurants, and independent stores.

Working alongside interior designer Charlee Allan Quinton, the decor is a playful approach to colour and pattern, creating joyful, dynamic spaces that are instantly recognisable. The bold colour scheme was designed in collaboration with Yes Colours who created a bespoke colour line of warm tones, including a pink, terracotta and burgundy, matching perfectly the hues of exposed brick fireplaces, original wooden flooring and vintage character features found throughout. YesColours is an eco-conscious paint company that uses pouches instead of tins (14,000 tonnes of paint tins end up in landfill every year).

In the bedrooms, the largest boast bay windows with sea views and all are peppered with linen bistro curtains, scalloped lampshades, bespoke wavy headboards, stripes, velvets, vintage rugs, and eclectic finds from local antique dealers (including Chris Ifil Antiques and Cliftonville Antiques). All come complete with contemporary bathrooms, walk-in rainfall showers and Haeckel’s toiletries (made using seaweed handpicked in Margate).

Downstairs, guests can make themselves at home in the stunning open plan living and drawing room, designed to ensure guests feel right at home. Here guests will discover an honesty bar (made from a beautiful repurposed antique display cabinet), cosy seating areas and a larder of locally sourced goodies to tuck into.

The creativity continues with the artwork, offering a collection of vintage posters from Projekt26 and an ever-changing gallery of emerging artists in the drawing room – Margate House launches this summer with a collection from Jemma Kennedy.

For now, guests will be treated to a delicious continental breakfast offering that you can help yourself to, but plans are afoot to repurpose the large basement kitchen into a pop-up restaurant later in 2023.

Bedrooms start from £115 B&B.
